Is that Gym Sweat? Is that Jim’s Sweat? Is that Jim’s “Gym Sweat”?
If you go to a public gym you have surely seen someone walk away from a machine, or station they recently used leaving a wet spot, or wet spots. These wet spots are sweat puddles from their hands, brow, butt, and even balls.
In other words, Ball Sweat.
If you haven’t noticed this at all, first, wake up and,….gross. Secondly, it is probably you walking away from your recently deposited ball sweat and you should feel shame.
This is not a new issue, but the topic has heightened my awareness now that we are living in this new COVID-19 world. No one wants to get sick from sweaty stuff, and that includes me.
Similarly, touching sweaty public use stuff has always been an acceptable thing. Grocery carts, door knobs, and the hand rail in line at Space Mountain have always been a touch point for thousands. Included in this regular touchy thing is everything in the gym. The gym may be the worst place of them all.
This blog does not include any science, however we do not need science to argue that other people’s sweat is gross. Keep that in mind.
In fact, before COVID-19 it was a regular thing to bring a towel with you to the gym to clean up after yourself. This was a pretty good practice in general, but the new norm is to actually disinfect the area after use.
The standard disinfectant wipe is the go-to, but to keep costs down gyms are offering paper towels and a bottle spray of disinfectant. Basically, you grab a paper towel, grab the spray bottle, squirt, and then wipe. This is better. Right?
Moreover, what is in that bottle? I have no idea. How many people are touching the bottle? How much paper are we wasting? Is my gym membership fee going to go up now to cover this new expense? Am I getting off topic? Why is this a topic on this site?
So many questions.
The point is, staying healthy, and clean takes more effort nowadays. Being a person that goes to the gym and sees “Jim’s” Gym Sweat, I felt the need to bring up the topic.
In conclusion, I am venting. Therefore, I leave you with this.
Do you just grin and bear it, or do you get off your butt and do the right thing?
Above all, we just want to stay healthy.
Please do the right thing Jim. However, if you are not compelled to do so, please stay home.
(I am just naming a fictional character named, “Jim”. I do not know a Jim who goes to the gym)
