What’s new as of July 2022 with YUP GEAR?
It has been over a year now since I started to work on the idea of YUP GEAR. Basically the story goes that I just wanted to go to a website where I could find numerous things that I would say “YUP” to. I just wanted to buy some stuff that I would use. I did not want to have to navigate through baby dolls, napkins, or cat slippers. I wanted to find what I could use, and what I was looking for – it was just a simple thing. Maybe I could even find something that I did not necessarily need, but straight up just wanted.
WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE?
Amazon has it. Amazon is an amazing retail website where you can find everything. Like EVERYTHING! Things you didn’t even know existed! Honestly I shop on Amazon regularly. It seems like most of my neighbors do as well, as I see Amazon trucks arrive daily. What an amazing thing Jeff Bezos and his team created. It was creative, and it has changed the way we all do business for ourselves. YUP GEAR is not trying to be Amazon. YUP GEAR is trying to be YUP GEAR. A reliable resource of items for like minded soles. Basically, it is an online retail location that you will find what you want and like, – if you think like me. If I would buy it and use it, I will sell it on YUP GEAR. However I do have some requirements.
First off I do buy toilet paper, chocolate, beer, guns, batteries, and more. I don’t actually buy any of these things online. Obviously a lot of us do, and you may think that this should be something that would appear on YUP GEAR, because “if I would buy it and use it, I will sell it on YUP GEAR” – right? Well not quite. I don’t really get the thrill of buying batteries or toilet paper in the same way that I do when I buy ammo cards, custom leather wallets, and tactical sunglasses. Ok…..maybe I do feel this way when I buy chocolate, so this might be in the YUP GEAR future. (I love chocolate. Please send me chocolate.) For now, we are focusing on the EDC and Tactical way of life, because quite honestly,…it is fun. A LOT of FUN!
WE’VE BEEN KINDA A MESS
This has not always been the case for YUP GEAR. YUP GEAR has been evolving since day one. I like hockey, concert life, and holidays. Because of this I came out of the barrel like a shotgun and not a rifle. We were not genre focused. YUP GEAR had all kinds of things presented for sale, which for the most part did not have anything to do with another. You could find a pair of hockey sunglasses, a pair of concert socks, a knife, and an ammo card. Quite the mix, and it didn’t really make sense. Unless you were me. You are not me. I am me. Me I am. This diversity in items was a bit confusing to most.
ADVICE & LEARNING
I asked a number of friends and family what they thought of the website as it developed, and most of my friends were super nice and told me how they loved it. “This is bad ass!”, “So many cool things”, “I would say “YUP” to that!”, etc.
My family was a bit less friendly, and asked me what I was going for, because they were confused. They wondered why I had hockey items on the site when it was clearly leaning on the EDC market. I had to answer the question, and I struggled a bit with the answer. I had to face myself and my choices. I came to the realization that the direction I was headed was wrong. I needed to focus more on the “niche” or category. YUP GEAR needed to be EDC and Tactical items because well…….again,….it was the most fun. This was a learning experience. YUP!
I had to avoid being one of those companies that sold everything and did not specialize in one thing. So!…..delete, delete, delete. I scaled back the site. I had some fun soccer shirts, gig clothing, and some knives that were not selling at all. I got rid of all of them. I cut down the menu to be more like In & Out Burger and I have tried to make it stupid simple. The K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple Stupid). Have you been to In & Out? Yum.
HAVING AN IDENTITY
Developing an identity is important, and it takes some time. This is not oppornatistic in the sense I am reading metrics, and seeing the trends of buyers on the web and then making changes. This is building an identity as a company and a brand. This is and has been a journey about learning how all of this ecommerce stuff works as well as getting a better understanding of what I like. Does that make sense? Maybe not. Let me try again.
I am not a web developer. I am a consumer that needs to get in, get out and go live my life. I need a website that works with me on this and I have not been super happy with a lot of the options out there. I need to rely on a brand that will take care of me. There are some amazing options out there, but for the most part, the online experience is not great, so I am trying to change that from a consumer point of view, and more specifically, My point of view. I am developing the brand of YUP GEAR to be something that can be relied upon. I would like to be a customer of YUP GEAR.
I seem to be rambling here. The point of this blog article isn’t about the EDC or Tactical items we are selling. It is about the development of YUP GEAR as a company, and a brand. Long and short of it, we are coming along. We have stronger relationships with our customers, and some of you are coming back 2 and 3 times!!!! Thank you so much. We love hearing from all of you and have had some great conversations with you about products, questions, and life in general! There are some great people out there and we are happy to call you our friends.
We are expecting to release another updated version of our site in the upcoming months. We see that there is a chance to improve our customer experience so we are investing into that!
It is highly unlikely that anyone is reading this post because we are so small and the blog activity is pretty dead, but if you are reading this….Hi! Leave a comment below and expect that you will receive a reply!
