They are just things. Guns are just things. They are not born, have a pulse, or breath. You can not see them take their first steps, share vows with them in whatever ceremony works for you, or steal a bite of ice cream from them when they are not looking. Guns are noisy projectile producers and they do not live. They are cold, unfeeling, man made items. So, why do we “LOVE” guns? According to my buddy Jonathan it’s because, “they make you feel meeeeean!”.
I guess that is one reason.
Let’s reflect on “LOVE”
For me, I have to reflect on what “love” means first. What does the word “love” actually mean when used in this question? Love is such an important word, but it get used in too many ways that are different than what is is meant for. Do you love your Mom as much as your car? I hope you love your Mom more than your car. If you don’t for any reason, then that sucks. Maybe you should work on that a little harder. Or maybe your Mom just isn’t that cool. I dunno.
Is it a safe thing to say you “love” tacos? I know I “love” tacos. Would I give my life to save tacos? No. Would I give my life to save my kids. Yes. Do I love my kids the same as tacos? No. One of them is full of goodness that makes me feel happy. The other is just a young person I feed tacos to.
You may see my point here, that “love” can mean a lot of different things. I guess you can love guns like you love your car, or tacos, but you can’t really love guns like you love your Grandma. It is just different, although your Grandma might be just as loud as a gun.
The feeling you have for guns may not even be “love”. It may be a feeling of security, safety, or comfort. It may be power or strength. You might just make you feel “meeeeeean.” Right Jonathan?
Do you “LIKE” guns?
Is it possible you just “LIKE” guns? If we were to gauge the interest in guns by YouTube channels you would say that there was a very deep “like” of guns by the general public. I am not sure how to do a look up on YouTube about how many channels refer to guns, but I betcha it is a bazillion kagillion. Finding a gun group, gun thread, or gun blog talking about guns, accessories, or skills online is very easy to do.
You are on one right now! You are reading something about guns right here! YUP! How ya doin’? 🙂
It is all about that feeling you have. You can feel the security and protection in your hand. Love it? It is probably a feeling you like, not love, but….., whatever. I am going with word “love”, but I am attaching the definition of “like” to it. Argue with me about this. Let’s fight. I don’t care.
“You talking to me?”, “Guns and Roses”, “Way of the Gun”
There is a romance between the owner of a gun and the gun itself that transcends real life. It is immortalized in images, song, and film. Most action movie involve some sort of shootout. This is a pivotal moment in most films, unless it is a John Wick movie, and it is as common as breathing.
Maybe because guns are just symbolic. They represent to power, strength, control, safety, and most importantly freedom. If you love freedom, you must love what protects that freedom right? It goes hand in hand. If you love freedom, you love guns. It’s that simple! It’s that simple? As Marty McFly would say….,”This is heavy.“
Is it the heavy weight in our hands, or the thrill of the kick when you pull on that trigger? Is it the smell of gun powder in the air or the target exploding with lead? This is everything all put together like ingredients for an amazing cake. Now I want cake.
Future of Guns
Guns are even projected to make it into the future. Ever watch a movie? I have. I have seen movies.
Even Star Wars has guns in them. Sure they are called blasters, and they shoot lasers, but they are still guns! Blasters would be a cool thing to have. Will we evolve to that, and will we “love” them?
Is it the bullets that make us feel the love? Do the bullet shape, size, and sounds make it desirable? It could be the impact of the bullet and what it does to the subject matter. PEW PEW PEW. It is always fun to say, or even write. It just brings a smile to your face! Rolling a round in your hand between your finger tips is always a fun time. The quiet static metallic item can turn into a violet loud action with the simple strike of the hammer. The beauty of having that type of power in your hand makes you a little excited, maybe a little scared, maybe a bit in “love”.
Back to the whole movie thing. Guns are in a lot of movies. Like a LOT! Add television shows that have guns in them and WOW! What about songs, and artwork? Lot’s of guns there! Plenty of guns provided, and all for your form of entertainment. Wait! What about video games! OMG (This means “Oh My Gosh”, or “Oh My Goodness”, or “Oh My Gawd!”) Almost all video game hero’s SHOOT something! Duck Hunt anyone?
You’re not the boss of me
Love is a feeling. This is also another reason why people love guns. You can’t tell people how to feel. You can do a lot of things, but feelings are feelings and they feel the way they feel, and that is all there is to it! Now I understand that maybe that last sentence didn’t make too much sense, but I feel like you understand and you can hurt my feelings.
There are also some other types of guns that people love. Screw guns are a huge favorite in the construction world. Most garages in America have one as well. Who doesn’t pick up a screw gun and pull the trigger right away? What about staple guns, or nail guns? What about caulking guns and hot glue guns! No matter what type of gun it is you want to just pull that trigger and say, “pewpewpew”.
There is so much more rambling I can do on this subject, but I think i am probably losing you, so I ramble more a little later on another blog post.
